The past and present lives of aromatherapy

2

Aromatherapy can not only nourish the skin and improve health, but also be seen as an elegant decoration, making it a fashion trend for handsome men and beautiful women. However, nowadays many people think that fragrant incense has just been introduced from outside the region. In fact, the custom of fragrant incense has a long history in China, starting from the Three Kingdoms and Two Jin Dynasties and continuing until the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China.

Aromatherapy History
From the unearthed objects, it can be seen that the fragrant aroma of the Three Kingdoms had a flat and round belly, resembling a jar or basin, with some beams or ears. The walls of the vessels were carved with dozens of round holes to release fragrance, and there were circular feet at the bottom, making them ancient and clumsy in shape. Later, in the Zhou Chu Tomb in Yixing, Jiangsu, the Western Jin Dynasty fragrant incense was discovered. The furnace body was spherical, with several rows of triangular air holes carved on it. A turtle button was molded on the top, and three bear feet were placed on the bottom and support plate of the furnace, showcasing its exquisite and exquisite appearance. At that time, there were also imitations of the Boshan style aroma of the former Han Dynasty, and the furnace cover was like a mountain range, surrounded by cloud like immortals. After burning the incense, the smoke slowly drifted through the holes in the furnace cover, like entering a fairyland in the Buddhist kingdom, and suddenly felt ethereal.
During the prosperous Tang Dynasty, a silver fragrant incense ball was commonly used among the nobility. According to the "Miscellaneous Records of the Western Capital," it was recorded that "the skillful craftsmanship of Chang'an was slow, and it was also called a lying incense ball. It was called a incense burner in the middle, which originated from the room wind, and its method was stopped later until it was slow. It was used for the transportation of the machine ring around it, and the furnace body was always flat, allowing bedding to be placed, so it was named." The small bowl inside the incense ball was equipped with two circular movable axes, with the center of gravity at the bottom. Therefore, no matter how the incense balls rolled, the circular movable axes could play a balancing role, keeping the small bowl always in a horizontal state. The internal burning spices would never overturn and burn clothes. Its principle Just like modern gyroscopes.

In the Song Dynasty, the Yaozhou kiln incense burner was shaped like a tea cup with a hollow inner cover on top, and had five human face feet at the bottom. The walls were decorated with patterns, making it a masterpiece of the Song Dynasty incense burner. The Yuan Dynasty imitated Longquan kiln porcelain incense, unearthed in Poyang, Jiangxi in 1974, is 7 centimeters high, with a hemispherical cover and hollow design, decorated with tangled branches of vines and grass. The lower part of the furnace body is carved with two layers of raised lotus patterns, with a uniform thin glaze layer and a gray yellow color. Its exquisite carving and exquisite patterns have had a profound impact on the production of the Ming and Qing dynasties, which were full of exquisite incense, incense burners, hand stoves, and foot stoves.
The production and use of fragrant incense during the Ming and Qing dynasties had entered a prosperous period. In the main hall, study, and inner bedroom of the Forbidden City, there were huge incense burners measuring up to three or four feet, resembling golden bells and bird cages. Most of them were exquisite cloisonn é e pieces such as cloisonn é enamel, and there were also exquisite copper, gold, and carvings, showcasing the luxurious and noble atmosphere of the royal family. At that time, literati and scholars often installed elegant aroma boxes with various shapes and patterns on their bookshelves, in order to create an elegant atmosphere that integrated with pleasure, ease, and emotions. The west wind suddenly rises, during the cold season, and people commonly use handmade foot stoves made of purple copper, white copper, and brass. The mesh cover is engraved with exquisite patterns or auspicious patterns. Whether it is the gentry, commoners, young ladies, or elderly women, each person has a stove, which has become a colorful and diverse folk landscape of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Aromatherapy deodorization method
The ancient people also discovered the best way to fully utilize the performance of plant spices, which was to place fragrant pills and cakes made from spices on the charcoal fire of the incense burner, and continuously smoke and bake them through the burning charcoal fire to spread the fragrance. According to the "Chen Family Fragrance Manual" written by Chen Jing of the Song Dynasty, the fragrant blocks (i.e. fragrant pills) that resemble soybeans are synthesized by processing, grinding, and fumigation of original fragrant herbs such as agarwood, green wood, Su He, chicken tongue, orchid, Hui, and pungent. They are more convenient to hide in one's arms than the "sachet" from the Han and Tang dynasties.
During the Han Dynasty, clothing such as "thick smoked embroidered quilts" and even fragrant smoked handkerchiefs appeared. According to literature records, the "smoked ball" (referred to as fragrant sachet in the Tang Dynasty) that appeared during the Western Han Dynasty was slightly larger than the fragrant pill. This type of "smoking ball" is mostly made of metals such as silver and copper, with hollow walls. Three layers of small balls are placed inside the ball in sequence, each layer of small balls hanging on a rotating shaft. The rotating shaft is fixed on the outer ball, and a small bowl for burning incense is hung on the innermost layer.
Due to the high temperature of the weather and human body temperature, the fragrance is emitted, and the sweat smell is naturally covered. However, it is worth mentioning that this method of "releasing fragrance and removing odor" is fundamentally different from the commonly used "applying makeup and powder" sun protection and odor removal method nowadays. It is not afraid of water and continuously releases fragrance from internal and external sources. Basically, it is parallel to sweating from pores during work, and the hotter the body, the stronger the fragrance it "burns" out.
The modern method of applying makeup and powder to dispel sweat has the opposite effect. The higher the temperature and sweat, the more embarrassing it becomes, and the more pungent the odor it emits. So, I think the avant-garde thinking of ancient people was very clear, and to improve odor, we must first "treat the root cause". The root cause is to improve air quality, air taste, and draw on the experience of ancient people. VLOV has specially developed a pure essential oil aromatherapy machine for this purpose. The ultimate goal of research and development is to not only improve air quality, but also benefit physical health and make the air fragrant and safe to use.
